FLOWERS AT HOLY ROOD

MEMORIAL WINDOW AND VASE

The Memorial Window is a stained glass depiction of the head of St John. It is situated on the left hand side of the Church. The original memorial vase was badly damaged in the fire in the 1960's. It was rescued, lovingly repaired, and used for many years after the event. Unfortunately it came to the point where it completely disintegrated and a new one, which is now in use, was commissioned

The vase and window are for people who have lost and wish to remember husbands, wives, children, or relatives of some kind. Some go along on a Friday morning and prepare the window themselves. Others make a donation and either watch the arrangement being created on a Friday morning, or go in later to view the result. People seem to derive a lot of satisfaction and peacefulness from having something they can look at and spend time thinking about the person that they are remembering.

At the beginning of every year a list is prepared allocating the memorial dates. It is displayed on the notice board in the Church Hall.

Anyone wishing to take part in the scheme or wanting more information should contact Joan Boord via the Church Office.

At Easter £1 donations are made to purchase lilies for the church. It is an opportunity for those who wish to remember someone who had died to have their names listed, framed and placed in the memorial window. This scheme has taken off and is very, very popular. Everybody is thrilled on Easter Sunday morning when the perfume fills the Church and the lilies really do look wonderful. The success of the scheme has enabled lilies to be provided at St Edmund's as well.
